The rating system

How Elo ratings work

Everyone starts at 1500. After each match the winner takes points from the loser, and how many depends on who was expected to win: an upset is worth a lot, beating a weaker player only a little. Over time, every rating settles where that player's results say it belongs.

Even match

1500 beats 1500

+16

winner

−16

loser

Either player could have won, so the winner takes half of the 32 points in play.

Favourite wins

1600 beats 1400

+8

winner

−8

loser

The expected result, so only a few points change hands.

Upset

1400 beats 1600

+24

winner

−24

loser

Beating a stronger player is worth three times as much.

The formula: new rating = old rating + 32 × (result − expected score). The result is 1 for a win, ½ for a draw and 0 for a loss, and the expected score is 1 / (1 + 10(opponent − you) / 400).

A draw pulls the two ratings toward each other: in the 1600 vs 1400 example, it gives the lower-rated player +8.

FAQ

Common questions

Is MatchRank really free?

Yes. There are no paid tiers, no player limits and no ads. Sign in with Google and create as many leagues as you like.

Does every player need an account?

No. Add players by name and they're on the leaderboard straight away. Anyone you invite signs in with Google to join, and league settings decide who can report results: any member, each player for their own matches, or only you.

Can I rank doubles or teams?

Yes. A league can rank individual players, fixed teams with their own rating, or pick-up teams: choose the sides for each match, and everyone on a side gains or loses the same points, based on the two sides' average ratings.

Can I run a tournament too?

Yes: single or double elimination, round robin, Swiss or group stage. Seed players by rating, at random or by hand.

Who can see my league?

Only its members, until you decide otherwise. Turn on the public page in league settings to get a leaderboard link anyone can open, no account needed.

Can we start fresh each season?

Yes. Ending a season saves the final standings to the season archive, crowns a champion and resets everyone to 1500 for the next one.
